Abstract

Flexing behavior has become commonplace, especially in an era of rapid technological and information development. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to flexing because they are in a phase of self-discovery, requiring external recognition to acknowledge their existence and value. However, flexing behavior often stems from low self-esteem stemming from a family culture that doesn't provide sufficient appreciation or validation. Low self-esteem triggers feelings of insecurity, which ultimately lead adolescents to seek attention or recognition on social media as a form of self-actualization. Adolescents begin posting about their lifestyles and luxury goods on social media, hoping to gain recognition, validation, and social acceptance from their peers and digital environment, thereby boosting their self-confidence. However, this need can negatively impact adolescents' social relationships with those around them. Multicultural counseling is the best solution for addressing flexing behavior in adolescents because this counseling model respects cultural diversity without discriminating against other cultures.
