Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country known for its cultural, ethnic, religious, and linguistic diversity. This diversity serves as a national identity as well as an important asset in maintaining national unity. However, such diversity often leads to misunderstandings and social conflicts, including within the school environment, making it crucial to find solutions to overcome these challenges. This article examines the role of multicultural counseling in fostering tolerance in schools. Multicultural counseling is a guidance and counseling approach that emphasizes the importance of sensitivity toward students’ diverse values, cultures, religions, and social backgrounds. In addition, multicultural counseling plays a significant role in developing tolerance because it facilitates students in understanding and appreciating cultural differences. A solid understanding of multicultural counseling is essential for counselors in nurturing tolerance among students, which can positively influence their social relationships. Therefore, this article recommends that school counselors apply multicultural counseling effectively so that it can help create a healthier school culture oriented toward shared values.
