Abstract

This research is motivated by the occurrence of students’ behaviors that do not fully reflect polite attitudes, such as inappropriate language use, lack of respect toward teachers, and violations of school regulations. It aimed to identify students’ politeness behavior and explore the strategies implemented by Guidance and Counseling (BK) teachers in improving students’ politeness at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Kota Kediri. A descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. The research informants consisted of BK teachers and students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques. The findings indicate that BK teachers apply several strategies, including information services, the implementation of the 5S culture (Smile, Greeting, Salutation, Polite, and Courteous), responsive services, individual counseling, and positive role modeling. Supporting factors include cooperation among school members and the madrasah’s character-building culture, while limited counseling time, social environment influences, and differences in students’ habits. The strategies implemented by BK teachers play an important role in continuously developing students’ polite behavior.
