The May 1998 riots were one of the darkest events in Indonesian history. The riots stemmed from social, political, and economic tensions that occurred during the New Order government. These riots not only sparked conflict but also triggered serious human rights violations. This study identifies and explains the forms of human rights violations against ethnic Chinese during the May 1998 riots, and highlights the impact of these human rights violations. The method used was a literature review of various relevant sources, such as articles, scientific journals, and websites. The results of the study indicate that human rights violations included physical violence, sexual violence, property destruction, and injustice. In addition, many members of the ethnic Chinese community lost their homes, jobs, and social status. The resulting impacts included profound trauma, significant economic losses, and the displacement of ethnic Chinese abroad, creating a diaspora. This research is expected to prevent similar human rights violations in the future, as well as provide an understanding of the importance of reconciliation efforts and the empowerment of vulnerable communities or ethnicities.
