Abstract

The 1998 Trisakti case was rooted in political and social tensions that occurred in Indonesia at the end of the New Order era. At that time, the government led by President Soeharto was increasingly authoritarian, with restrictions on freedom of expression, silencing of the opposition, and neglect of human rights. The economic crisis that hit Asia in 1997 also worsened social and economic conditions in Indonesia, causing a spike in prices of goods, high unemployment, and public dissatisfaction with the government. The 1998 Trisakti case was in the spotlight because of the shooting by security forces of students who were peacefully conveying demands for reform. The main problem is the excessive use of force by the state in responding to actions that should have been protected as a form of freedom of opinion and assembly. This study uses a literature study method with data obtained from articles, books, and websites that are analyzed thoroughly. It is hoped that this research can be applied to create ideas that can be used in future research.
