Abstract

The 1998 activist abduction tragedy is a crucial event in Indonesia's political history that highlighted human rights violations and the failure of democracy during the New Order era. It occurred in the context of the economic and political crisis that hit Indonesia on the eve of reformasi. The abduction of a number of pro-democracy activists by the state apparatus showed repressive practices that were contrary to the principles of democracy and human rights. This study aims to analyze the event from the perspective of democracy and human rights education, focusing on its impact on increasing political awareness and democratic culture in Indonesia. The research method used is a qualitative approach. Thus, the lack of attention to this tragedy in education is an important reason for this research, so that the current generation can understand the importance of preserving and protecting human rights and democratic principles. This tragedy provides valuable lessons about the importance of democracy and human rights education, in order to raise the next generation's awareness of human rights violations and injustice. This research concludes that the 1998 activist abduction tragedy should be an important material in democracy and human rights education to prevent similar violations in the future.
