Abstract

Guidance and counseling services in schools require media that can encourage students' self-reflection on their experiences, emotions, and developmental issues. This study aims to examine cinema therapy as a reflective medium in guidance and counseling services, encompassing its concept, function, benefits, limitations, and implications. The study used a qualitative approach with a simple systematic literature review design. Data were obtained from eight national scientific articles published in 2020–2026 through Google Scholar and analyzed using narrative thematic synthesis. The study results indicate that cinema therapy is widely applied in group guidance and counseling and contributes to increased self-efficacy, empathy, altruistic attitudes, and self-confidence. Films function as a reflective stimulus through character identification, behavior modeling, affective engagement, and directed discussions. Cinema therapy has the potential to integrate cognitive, affective, and social aspects in guidance and counseling services and serve as a reference for guidance and counseling teachers in designing creative, contextual, and meaningful services. However, further research with a more robust design is still needed.
