Abstract

Background Low self-confidence hinders high school students' academic and social participation, characterized by passivity, reluctance to express opinions, and weak interaction skills. Focus Group Discussion (FGD)-based group guidance services were explored as an intervention to address these conditions in grade X students of SMAN 3 Kota Kediri. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was applied to a population of 426 students in the 2025/2026 academic year. Eight students identified as having low self-confidence scores were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire, then analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and Paired Sample t-test. The results showed that three main indicators, namely courage to express opinions, independence, and social interaction, increased significantly, proving the effectiveness of the FGD technique in group guidance. Further research is recommended using a controlled experimental design with a larger and more diverse sample.
