Abstract

This article discusses the phenomenon of doomscrolling as a digital behavior that

contributes to psychological stress among Generation Z. As digital natives,

Generation Z intensively uses social media to access information, which increases

their exposure to negative content. Continuous consumption of distressing news

triggers mental fatigue, emotional instability, and prolonged stress that may

negatively affect mental health. This condition is reinforced by cognitive

mechanisms such as negativity bias, information overload, and compulsive

internet use patterns supported by social media algorithms. The article aims to

analyze doomscrolling as a stressor for Generation Z, explain its impact on mental

health, and propose the Javanese local wisdom values of eling lan waspada as a

preventive approach. Eling emphasizes self-awareness of thoughts and emotions,

while waspada highlights self-control and vigilance in managing digital behavior.

Integrating these cultural values offers a reflective and adaptive strategy to help

Generation Z regulate emotions, reduce stress, and maintain mental well-being in

the digital era.
