Abstract

Indonesia's young generation has a crucial role as agents of change in the digital era. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education has the potential to support the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, excessive use of AI can reduce students' ability to think critically and solve problems. This article examines the impact of AI use on students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills and excessive dependence on this technology. AI provides benefits such as personalized learning, time efficiency, and access to information, but it can also reduce analytical skills and the ability to solve problems independently. Dependence on AI can inhibit students' engagement in deep thinking processes and exacerbate algorithmic bias. Therefore, this article suggests that educators teach the wise use of AI as a tool, not a substitute for critical and creative thinking. The problem-based learning (PBL) approach is effective in ensuring that students remain engaged in problem solving. Educational institutions need to formulate policies that support the balanced use of AI to develop student competencies
