Abstract

Genetic variation analysis aims to determine biodiversity at the gene level and to identify superior germplasm for plant breeding. The matK (Maturase K) gene is a chloroplast gene of approximately 1,500 base pairs (bp) located within the trnK intron and can reveal more specific molecular characteristics. This study aims to determine gene variation within the genus Syzygium based on the matK gene. The method used was descriptive exploratory. The research stages began with downloading matK gene DNA sequences of the genus Syzygium from the GenBank database on the NCBI website, followed by sequence alignment using BioEdit version 7.2.5, and subsequently analyzing the variation sites of the matK gene in the genus Syzygium. The results of the alignment of six matK gene DNA sequences revealed 23 gene variation sites within the genus Syzygium.
