Abstract

Bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum) are known to contain antioxidant compounds that can be used as herbal medicine, including for lowering cholesterol levels, as anticancer agents, wound healers, chitinase inhibitors, treatments for bone diseases, prostate disorders, and as antiviral agents. The purpose of this article is to further analyze the compounds in bay leaves (S. polyanthum) that function as antioxidants. A descriptive–explorative research method was used to identify the compounds contained in bay leaves (S. polyanthum). This study was conducted in silico. The results showed that there are four main antioxidant compounds in bay leaves (S. polyanthum). Squalene functions in fat or cholesterol synthesis and catalyzes many reactions involved in drug metabolism. β-sitosterol has properties that help reduce cholesterol levels, act as an anticancer agent, and accelerate wound healing. Pyrogallol functions in regulating body cholesterol and preventing cellular damage. Phytol also plays a role in cholesterol control and has antiviral activity.
