Abstract

Direct practical activities significantly reinforce students' theoretical
understanding. One essential biology practical activity at the high
school (SMA) level is the microscopic observation of plant cell
structures (plant tissue). However, the implementation of plant tissue
practicals in schools faces several obstacles, including the limited
availability of microscopic slides, the high cost of purchasing
commercial prepared slides, and the difficulties teachers encounter in
preparing microscopy-based learning media. This research aims to
identify the actual condition of plant tissue practical implementation
in schools, the constraints faced by teachers and students, and the
resulting need for a simplified practical guide that utilizes natural dyes
as an alternative to synthetic stains. The method employed in this
study is descriptive qualitative, with data collected through interviews
and a need analysis questionnaire distributed to biology teachers in
several high schools and vocational schools (SMA/equivalent) in
Kediri. The research findings indicate a strong need among teachers
for a practical guide that is easy to implement, economical, and
utilizes natural materials. The combined scores across the three
analyzed aspects are: Availability and Constraints (77%), Need for
Learning Media (91%), and Urgency for Independent Slide
Preparation (96%). The independent preparation of plant tissue slides
is highly desired by teachers, as it is expected to enhance students'
practical skills and deepen their conceptual understanding of plant
tissues.
