Abstract

The increasing complexity of environmental issues demands a
strong understanding from the younger generation, especially
university students, regarding conservation and environmental
management. This study aims to determine the level of student
understanding of the concepts and practices of conservation and
environmental management. The research employed a qualitative
descriptive method using a questionnaire distributed to 116 biology
students who participated in a guest lecture. The results showed
that most respondents had a relatively good understanding of
environmental issues, with 98.3% indicating knowledge of the
concept of phytoremediation. However, this understanding was not
fully reflected in practical application in daily life. Some aspects still
require improvement, particularly in translating knowledge into
action. These findings highlight the need to strengthen practical
components in environmental education for students. This study is
expected to serve as a foundation for developing more applicable
curricula and educational programs that enhance student
awareness and active participation in environmental conservation.
