Abstract

Rivers play a crucial role in the lives of surrounding communities. In
the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), rivers function not only as
watershed systems but also as vital natural resources that maintain
ecological balance and support social life. The local philosophy of
“hamemayu hayuning bawono” reflects the cultural responsibility
of the Yogyakarta community to preserve river ecosystem
sustainability. However, scientific research on rivers in the
Yogyakarta region remains limited and unevenly distributed.
Therefore, this study aims to analyze the distribution, thematic
orientation, and intensity of river ecosystem research in DIY through
a systematic literature review. The literature search was conducted
digitally using the keyword “Yogyakarta rivers,” resulting in 737
articles. However, only 15 articles met the inclusion criteria and
were eligible for further analysis. The results indicate that research
covers 12 rivers, with the Winongo River being the most frequently
studied, followed by the Gajahwong, Code, and Bedog rivers. Most
studies focus on hydrology, water quality, and watershed
management, indicating a strong tendency toward technical and
environmental monitoring studies. In contrast, research addressing
biodiversity, riparian vegetation, and the ecological impacts of
anthropogenic activities remains very limited. These findings reveal
thematic gaps and highlight the need for further research oriented
toward ecological and conservation perspectives. Strengthening
these aspects is essential to support more integrated and
sustainable river management in the Yogyakarta region.
