Abstract

Second-grade elementary school students' understanding of the topic of currency is still not optimal. This problem is influenced by internal factors, such as students' limited ability to recognize currency denominations and perform simple calculations, as well as external factors, including the use of less varied learning media, teacher-centered instruction dominated by the lecture method, and the lack of contextual learning activities that actively involve students. These conditions cause students to be less active, become easily bored, and experience difficulties in relating the concept of currency to everyday life. This study aimed to analyze the need for SIBELA (Active Shopping Simulation) as a learning medium in mathematics instruction on the topic of currency for second-grade elementary school students. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using a needs assessment approach. Data were collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation involving second-grade teachers and students at SD Negeri 3 Sumberkepuh. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicated that teachers needed learning media that are interactive, contextual, easy to use, and capable of increasing students' engagement in the learning process. Meanwhile, students expected learning media that are attractive, utilize concrete objects, provide learning experiences through simulation activities, and enable them to learn while playing. Based on the results of the needs analysis, SIBELA was considered appropriate to meet the characteristics and learning needs of second-grade elementary school students in learning the topic of currency, thereby having the potential to support more active, meaningful, and enjoyable mathematics learning.
