Self-harm is a condition in which a person injures or poisons themselves, regardless of underlying motivation. Depression is one factor that can trigger self-harm. Self-harm typically occurs when someone is facing very difficult feelings or is in a painful situation and then vents their feelings by hurting or harming themselves. This is done intentionally as a coping mechanism by venting emotions that cannot be expressed verbally. Coping mechanisms are behaviors that a person uses to control themselves when facing an undesirable situation. If someone has maladaptive coping mechanisms, this has the potential for the individual to engage in self-harm. Therefore, media efforts are needed to reduce self-harm due to depression, one of which is mask batik. The purpose of this article is to understand how mask batik can be used as a medium for emotional recovery and a safer alternative channel for self-harming impulses in individuals experiencing depression. This article explains that mask batik art can help individuals express their emotions and manage self-harming impulses.
