Abstract

Speaking is a crucial skill in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL), yet many senior high school students face significant challenges in developing their speaking abilities due to limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and fear of making mistakes. This study investigates the effect of role-play using the window shopping model on the speaking skills of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Purwoasri. Employing a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, the research involved 23 students selected through cluster sampling. Data were collected through speaking tests assessing grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency, and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students' speaking skills after the treatment, with the mean score increasing from 49.99 to 64.95 (Z = -4.122, p < 0.001). Vocabulary demonstrated the highest gain (20 points), followed by grammar (17 points), while pronunciation and fluency each improved by 6 points. The role-play method with the window shopping model proved effective in enhancing vocabulary and grammar, reducing speaking anxiety, and creating an engaging learning environment. This study contributes to the growing body of research on communicative language teaching approaches and provides practical implications for English teachers seeking innovative strategies to develop students' oral communication skills
