Abstract

Junior secondary Social Studies instruction faces challenges in sustaining students’ attention, engagement, and learning motivation. This article synthesizes empirical findings on instructional media and proposes a practical implementation framework for resource-constrained schools. A narrative literature review was conducted on empirical studies published between 2014 and 2025, complemented by international literature on student engagement, active learning, multimedia learning, and technology integration. The findings indicate that videos, interactive media, multimedia, and locally contextualized media can support motivation and engagement when integrated with active learning, feedback, discussion, and tasks connected to students’ experiences. Thus, instructional variety should focus on enriching learning experiences rather than increasing the number of media used. Based on the synthesis, the Media–Motivation–Meaning–Monitoring–Modification (5M) framework is proposed to guide teachers in planning, implementing, monitoring, and refining varied Social Studies instruction using available school resources.
