The development of community literacy culture cannot be separated from the history of Indonesian libraries. This research raises the theme of the history of the establishment of Rekso Pustoko in 1867, as a library as well as a container for the conservation of various archives in Dutch, English and Javanese. The most literacy that we can find there belongs to Mangkunegara IV and Mangkunegara VII. Today, thousands of manuscripts from the Rekso Pustoko Library are still well preserved and some have been digitized. This study uses a historical research methodology by analyzing one of the Jayabaya 21 newspapers published by Poerwanto on June 24, 1984 which reported the establishment of the Rekso Pustoko Library. Based on the results of the study, the Rekso Pustoko Library used as a manuscript and developed into a reading garden which was opened to the general public, the starting point for improving the education of indigenous people against various limitations and structurations in post-independence Indonesian society.</p> ER -
