The result shows variations of the students’ learning styles at X AKL 1 SMKN 2 Kediri are visual learning style and auditory learning style. The data analysis result shows that the students' pre-test was 55,76, while the post-test score was 74,85. In addition, based on data analysis, the calculated t test is higher than the t table value (11,475 > 2,036). Mastering four linguistic abilities, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, is essential for students. Reading is a preductive learning process that involves mentally repeating, spelling, pronouncing, guessing, and understanding meaning. Skimming and scanning strategies, such as scanning and skimming, can help students improve their comprehension and self-assurance. These strategies can reduce the speed at which they read, making them essential for success in the English language. A study at the University of Nusantara PGRI Kediri investigated skimming and scanning strategies in first-year students' reading courses. Descriptive methodologies were used to study individuals' experiences, behaviors, interactions, and social situations. Data was collected from first-year students taught strategic skimming and scanning in reading courses. The study aimed to promote student literacy and learning by building reading abilities. A questionnaire was conducted with 51 responses from students on the implementation of skimming and scanning strategies in reading comprehension. Most students were able to use these strategies, such as searching for relevant keywords and reading quickly from sentence to sentence. However, some students were unsure about their comprehension and application of these strategies. The study found that English language education students use skimming and scanning strategies in reading, saving time by quickly finding information in books, articles, or newspapers. Students can read important phrases and words quickly, with a reading speed twice that of general reading. Questionnaires serve as indicators of these strategies. Students should better understand these strategies, lecturers should be more in-depth, and researchers should further develop these theories to improve their use in reading activities.
2023-10-09T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2023 Indra Putra Prihadi, Khoiriyah, Suhartonohttps://proceeding.unpkediri.ac.id/index.php/eltt/article/view/4226The Effect of Team Game Tournament (TGT) in Teaching Reading of Narrative Text to The First Semester at The Nurse Program of Health Sciences Faculty of Kadiri University2023-12-11T09:47:09+07:00Jatmikojatmiko@unik-kediri.ac.idAgung Wicaksonoagungwicaksono@unpkediri.ac.idPamadya Vitasmoropamadyavitasmoro@unik-kediri.ac.id
Reading is one of four language skills. It enables listeners to understand the speaker and avoid misunderstandings. However, teaching speaking is a complex undertaking. During the learning process, students face numerous challenges, such as a lack of vocabulary, speaking fluency, and inaccurate pronunciation. These issues can be overcome by employing a non-monotonous learning model. The snowball throwing model is one of the non-monotonous learning strategies that can increase students' speaking skills. This study was carried out to answer the following problem formulations: (1) What were the students' speaking abilities before being taught using the snowball throwing model at SMAN 4 Kediri? (2) How is the students' speaking ability after using the snowball throwing model at SMAN 4 Kediri? (3) How far is the effectiveness before and after the snowball throwing model at SMAN 4 Kediri? The quantitative research approach employed in this study was a pre-experimental study with pre-test and post-test design. Class XI IPS 4 samples were chosen. One group of 35 students was involved. The data were acquired using the following procedures: conducting the pre-test, giving the treatment, and conducting the posttest. After obtaining the test score, the data was examined and processed in SPSS using the t-test procedure. The pre-test results mean 47.40; after the pre-test, the treatment was given in the form of using the snowball throwing model on teaching speaking to improve students' speaking skills; during the treatment, there was an increase, as evidenced by the post-test results, which mean 72.37. To determine the importance, compare tcount to ttable is obtained at a significant level of 5%, and when compared to tcount 17.464, it can be shown that tcoun is more than ttable, namely 17.464> 2.034. This study uses a literature review as a research method. In this study, eight articles were reviewed. The articles reviewed were taken from the Google Scholar database, whose topic is English Learners' Strategies for Improving Their Reading Comprehension. The articles reviewed are limited to those using student research subjects, with the year of publication in the last 10 years from 2023. To direct and facilitate data search, the authors set several goals, including definitions and concepts of reading, various methods students use to develop their reading skills, and variables that affect reading skills.
